I was coming off my second rough bout of food poisoning in 3 weeks, for which I desperately needed rest, rehydration and nutrient-rich food: all things that are in very short supply at 16,400′ / 5,000 m. People are generally aware of the objective difficulty of the distance to Everest Base Camp, and while many underestimate the elevation, I think the biggest risk to a successful Himalayan adventure is food poisoning and personal hygiene. You never know if the little old woman who just topped off the tea house furnace with more yak dung is going to go wash her hands before preparing your dal bhat and veggie momos.
Everything you see along the road to EBC was carried there by porters, mules and yaks: building materials (windows, cinderblocks, doors, sheet metal), all food (meat, vegetables), bottled drinks/beer, furniture, propane for cooking, everything. You’re not supposed to eat meat beyond Namche Bazar because it has presumably spent more than 3 days on someone’s back making the journey up to that point. The local Sherpa people cannot raise enough meat and produce to feed trekkers daily; all trekker food must be carried up. These porters are superhuman, many of them in flip flops. We even saw a guy in Wellington boots carrying a refrigerator on his back. Our guide told us that if someone offered them nice hiking boots, they would most likely sell them to provide for their families back home.
Taken from a viewpoint above the Sherpa village Dingboche, Khumbu Region, Nepal.
Getting the shot: My legs did most of the work on this one.

After experimenting with several different printers and types of prints, and speaking with about a dozen different fine art photography gallery owners around the world to pry for their sources, I’ve chosen to work with a renowned print shop in the US who produces superior gallery-level prints. These are statement pieces with superior detail, rich pigments and gloss finishes that will not fade or yellow over time. I have tried several cheaper alternatives, and I feel that these prints best represent my work and will last for years to come.
All prints come with hardware for hanging and do not need any additional framing or components to be ready for display.
Canvas Prints are professional 1 1/2″ thick gallery-wrapped canvas wall art prints. A wire hanger is included as the standard option because they hang perfectly flush to the wall; a sawtooth hanger is a second option (by request only).
Fujiflex Silver Halide Prints use a process inspired by traditional darkroom photography, where light exposure activates unique silver halide crystals in the pigment. Chemical development then reveals the image with unmatched clarity, vibrant color, and smooth, continuous tones. If you’re wondering which print is best, this one is best.
Contact me directly if you desire a frame, specific size or specific editing style.
Allow 7-14 days for processing and production, and 5-7 days for shipping. If you desire a wooden crate or have questions, please ask here.
Due to the print and shipping costs, all sales are final. However, if you have any issues with your print(s), simply let me know and I will work directly with the printer to resolve any issues.
